Dr. Vincent F. Gravano, 83, of Walnut Creek, CA, and formerly of Staten Island, NY, passed away on September 11th. Vincent, known to his family and friends as Jim, was born October 10, 1931 in the Little Italy neighborhood of Manhattan. Jim graduated from Fordham University in 1955 and received his medical degree from the University of Rome in 1959. Jim met the love of his life, Nita Gonzalez, at Brooklyn Hospital while he was completing his medical residency and Nita worked as a laboratory technician. Jim and Nita were married in 1966 and shortly thereafter moved to Staten Island where they raised their two children, David and Maria Elena. Jim maintained a long and distinguished medical practice as an Internist for over 40 years on Staten Island. Jim was an avid reader, enjoyed discussing politics, breaking into song every now and then, watching all sports - especially Duke basketball games, but most of all Jim loved spending time with his five granddaughters. Jim is predeceased by his wife Nita, his parents, Calogero and Concetta, brothers Frank and Steve, and sister Vincenza. Jim is survived by his children David (Valerie) and Maria Elena Whelan (Chris), his granddaughters Nita, Miranda, Winona, Isabella, Claudia, and his sister Millie. A memorial service celebrating Jim's life will take place in New Jersey. Donations in his memory may be made to Hospice of the East Bay, 3470 Buskirk Avenue, Pleasant Hill, CA, 94523.
