Obituary for Steinhauer

Gene D. Steinhauer passed away after a long battle with congestive heart failure on April 16, 2007. Gene was born January 1, 1944 in Fresno, CA to Wilbert and Rose Steinhauer. He graduated from McLane High School in 1961 and served in the Air Force for four years. Gene earned a BA and a Masters degree from Fresno State and a PhD from the University of Montana in 1978. He received tenure in 1994 from CSU Hayward. His contributions to the field of psychology include 17 articles and a book entitled Artificial Behavior published in 1986. In 2004 Gene was honored as a Distinguished Professor at the Contra Costa Campus of CSU Hayward. In both 2000 and 2006 he took home the prestigious Steiny trophy. He retired from teaching in 2006. Gene was a dedicated professor and researcher. Students reported that he challenged them in the classroom while making education fun with his quirky sense of humor. He enjoyed watching open-wheel racing, gardening, bird watching, collecting stamps, golf, tennis, being a stay-at-home dad and eating. Gene was preceded in death by his mother, father and brother Steven. He will be missed by his sister Paulette Reed, his brothers Larry and Jerry, wife Cynthia, their two children Hannah (8), and Kevin (6), his son Christopher, his daughter Karlie, his grandchildren Amanda and Nicholas and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Gene's life will be held on April 28, 2007, please contact family for further information. Donations may be made in his honor to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
