She was raised in Chicago, IL and was the oldest of four children. Barbara married Robert Alexander Hughes on September 13, 1958 and moved to Castro Valley, CA. where she lived most of her life. That union was blessed with one son, Brent Alexander Hughes. She was faithful to God, her church and her family. Preceding her death, she was a member of Transfiguration Church in Castro Valley, CA. Barbara was a devoted wife for 49 years until Robert's death. She dedicated her life to taking care of her family and caring for others. Later she returned to the nursing profession working for Dr. Kallmen's private practice in San Leandro, then later at Hayward Convalescent Hospital and Chabot Convalescent hospital in Castro Valley. Later she cared for her late husband, Robert, through his stages of Alzheimer's disease. "Gramby", as she was affectionately known by her children and grand children, loved music and loved to dance.
