Obituary of Jean A. Travers

Jean Alice Travers, died on October 21, 2014 in her home in Martinez after a short battle with cancer. She was 88. Jean was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on November 23, 1926 to Yvonne and Fred Deschenes. She married Gil Travers in l947. He came to Martinez in l948 to work at the steel mill in Pittsburg and she joined him. For 66 years she lived in Martinez and was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church. Her husband, Gil, was a member of the Martinez City Council for four years, serving as Mayor from 1967 to 1968. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years. Jean enjoyed bridge, golf and bowling. At one time, she was a member of four bowling teams. She volunteered for ten years at the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center. Jean is survived by her eight children; Catherine Travers (Steve Cohn) of Sacramento; Kathleen Travers of Elk Grove; Gary Travers of Martinez; Jack Travers of Martinez; Theresa Marantette (Rich) of San Diego; David Travers (Jenny) of Pittsburg; Susan Travers (Mike Fontes) of Martinez; Greg Travers of Martinez; and nine grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Claire Swanner of Sacramento. A funeral mass will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Church on Friday, October 24 at 10:00 a.m. The interment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette.
