Mr Duffy passed thru my life about 25 years ago in Monterey, CA. I am so sorry he is gone but so glad I bought the Chron the day of the announcement. I had no idea what a walking musical juke-box he was! He certainly never played or showed off for me as so many people like to do. He was a music critic for a local paper and was always very supportive in print and in person of my piano playing and theater music writing, in this case at the Wharf Theater in Monterey. My sweetest memory is this, told to me by him totally off hand and again without self-importance. Unfortunatley I don't remember the title of the Broadway show he mentioned but I'm sure more than one person can fill in that blank.
GD: Nice new original show Barney
BH: Thanks.
GD: I was lucky enough to be part of a B'way show some years ago.
BH: Really?
GD: It did okay but unfortunately it opened the same night as...fill in blank....(Sound of Music?)...(Music Man?)...etc.
And I think he smiled and shrugged his shouders and indicated "that's the way it goes, but boy we had fun." And also.. you keep going kid! What a guy!
Blessings on all the Duffy's..especially Gordon!

Our father was a true gentleman and a very wonderful, gifted and kind man. He worked in an aerospace company for decades, apparently with skill since they would not let him retire while others were laid off.
Yet at his core were family and music. He was a musical artist who expressed his muse and made so many feel joy when he played his beloved piano. He was a true Music Man. If he entered any room that contained a piano, he would immediately start playing. He was accurately introduced at Melvyn's as: "Gordon, the man who knows every song ever written." He introduced us and many others to a world of music and theatre that enriched us. His wonderful grandson Brian, who gave him so much happiness in later years and who I believe has learned much from him, seems to be drawing on that artistic gift that so animated Dad.
He loved his family, which included good friends. He was the family historian, tracing our lineage back to Ireland and then the East Coast. He always emphasized responsibility and he sacrificed much to give us a good home and upbringing.
With a twinkling humor and without conceit or a heavy hand, he kept us all close to him and each other, even if geographically we were separated.
The larger than life figure in the high school yearbook really was an extraordinary man, but without pretense or ego. He had an independent and self sufficient spirit. He really cared about the people in his life. He was charming, dignified and honest. He treated everyone with courtesy and consideration. He lived honorably and had a true sense of decency. He gave much-yet without expectation.
We all smile when we remember him and the many special moments we shared with him.
He had a full and happy life and now his spirit is free. We mourn our loss but celebrate him. We are grateful to have been in his family, to have shared his life, and we will miss him. He truly was unique. Thank you, Dad. We love you.

I can honestly say Gordon Duffy is the only man who ever sang to me, and not only that, he sang a song he wrote about a girl named Cynthia while in college. He hadn't thought about it since that time, but 4 years ago sat at the piano and brought tears to my eyes as he remembered every word, every note. I only knew him in these last few years, but he always offered a warm welcome and a flirtatious and open spirit. I hope his spirit is soaring.

Kathy you have a tremendous Dad. I am so grateful for the times spent around the piano at your home with him whilst my Dad would try to stump him on music (not that it could ever happen). Thank you for sharing him. I am sure that he is sharing his music on his next great adventure.

The world would be a better place if there were more men such as Gordon! A true gentleman of the "Old School", he touched more lives than we will ever know, not only through his music, but for those fortunate enough to have known him. He truly cared about his friends, and the loss is ours, as well as his family's!
I hope he gets to play piano in Heaven, for that is surely his new home!!!!!!!!!!!!!
