Nabil Ayyad Garas August 15, 1942-March 7, 2007
Resident of Concord
Nabil Garas was the beloved husband of Erica Garas, loving father of Dahlia Garas (Mark Still) and Lydia Garas. Nabil was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, with his three sisters. He moved to the United States in 1973 to study at the University of Kentucky and received his PhD in Plant Pathology/Biochemistry. In 1982, he moved with his family to Concord, California, where he has resided for 25 years.
Nabil was an outgoing and good-humored man, always ready to entertain and enjoy a bottle of wine with friends and family. He worked as a scientist and manager at Varian for the past 12 years. He attended St. John the Evangelist Orthodox Church in Orinda where Nabil and Erica pioneered a project to build a pre-school for the community, which has helped to support the church since 1989.
In addition to his wife and daughters, Nabil is survived by two sisters and many nephews and nieces still residing in Cairo. He is also survived by his much-loved nephew Ashraf, and nieces Amal, Odette and Eva and their families residing in the US.
